Old Williamsonians 5 Shooters Hill 10
After a stomping performance the week previous at Askieans, one could be forgiven for expecting a similar performance when the Math School Warriors returned home to face Shooters Hill. Unfortunately this was not the case, instead the Old Boys found themselves unable to play their usual lavish style of rugby. Any anticipation the spectators had of seeing a running game of rugby were dispelled when the visiting pack shoved the ball up their proverbial jumpers and marched to victory. The home side started the game well, taking the lead through Darren ‘Garfield’ Finn who slipped through a big hole to run in for the try, the remainder of the half saw a well balanced game with both sides making ground in different areas of the pitch, Shooters Hill preferring the tight while Sam Bower was finding holes to exploit in Midfield. At half time Willies deservedly lead 5-0 although went in feeling that more clinical finishing would have put the game past the visitors. In the second half the entire complexion of the game changed, Old Williamsonian’s lost Ross ‘Savage’ Savin to a shoulder injury and with that about 5 stone in a pack that was already giving up about 3 Rick Waller’s in weight to the bulkier Shooters Hill. The visitors began to take control of the break down, driving the mobile Williamsonian pack off the ball with relative ease. Two carbon copy scores in the corner by the visitors who now resembled a spoilt toddler unwilling to share his toys finished the game and rounded off a disappointing defeat for the old boys.
Consistency is going to be the key to a successful season. Whilst the Old boys didn’t play extremely well they were not allowed to by the bigger opposition a situation that will arise time and again in Kent 2 and one that Willies will have to overcome if they are to compete for honours. |
