Old Williamsonian’s 58 Brokleian’s 5

Freddie Mercury once famously sang “don’t stop me now, I’m having such a good time, I’m having a ball” Never had these words resounded so pertinently if a little camply in the minds of Williamsonian players and fans alike after a resounding victory at the fortress.

With the ground finally moist enough for Phil Scott to give the new boots a run out the old boys took to the pitch with thoughts of the last gasp defeat to New Ash Green still running through their minds.  These thoughts were forgotten as quickly as that girls name you met on Saturday night as Willies pushed forward, putting the visitors defence under pressure with some good phases of rugby resulting in Jamie Collins proving that retirement is just a figment of any players imagination by bursting through the line to open the scoring.  Complacency has cast a shadow over Old Willies performances of late they have allowed teams to regain composure far too easily.  No sooner had the old boys taken the lead the visitors had responded with a score of their own, a neat kick taking a fortunate bounce to land in the hands of a grateful Brokleian centre.  This seemed to urge the home side into life as they took control of the game, exploiting gaps out wide away from the strong Brolkleian pack.  Darren ‘Garfield’ Finn combining well with Sam ‘Side Show Bob’ Bower continuously broke the visiting defensive line creating opportunities for Chris ‘Dawson’ Norris, Steve Franks and Jamie Collins to cross the line.

The second half saw the welcome return of Mark ‘Sqwelch’ Welch who had been sidelined for the best part of a year with a broken leg.  Whilst understandably lacking fitness Welch appears to have developed a new found talent for passing (that’s right passing), making an instant impact by feeding Phil Scott who drew two defenders to put in Chris ‘Dawson’ Norris for his second of the game.  Welcome back Sqwelch!

A dominating performance resulting in an impressive result against a team who should not be taken lightly, but Willies should be under no illusions; there are still areas which need improvement if they are to be genuine competitors for promotion this year.  This improvement in play is no fluke; increase in numbers of quality players now means that Coach Glynn Mitchell and skipper Thomas Lord have selection headaches every week, a far cry from the selection meeting last year.
